Pune: The Central Railway (CR) has implemented an array of measures to ensure passenger and train safety during the monsoon season. Dr. Ramdas Bhise, Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) and PRO Pune Railways, detailed the initiatives taken to address challenges in critical areas such as ghat sections, tunnel portals, and vulnerable spots.
To combat the risk of rockfall and landslides, rockfall barriers, boulder netting, and solid fencing have been installed. Strengthening structures like steel girders and gabion walls aim to fortify vulnerable areas. Micro pilling has also been conducted to stabilize railway tracks.
CCTVs at strategic locations enhance surveillance capabilities. Additionally, 28 patrol persons with GPS technology and 71 watchmen ensure on-ground vigilance and security. A combined length of 21.9 kilometres of yard drain, 77.75 kilometres of track drain and 19.85 kilometres of catch water drain were cleaned.
The Pune to Mumbai route’s 25 vulnerable spots have been identified, including deep cuttings, boulder fall locations, flood-prone regions, and bridges with inadequate waterways.
