Pune, 20th June 2023: A minor dispute among inmates at Yerwada Central Jail escalated into a violent clash on Monday morning, resulting in approximately 16 prisoners sustaining injuries. The incident, which occurred around 10-10:30 am, has prompted local authorities to file a case against six individuals involved, invoking relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The accused face charges that include voluntarily causing harm using dangerous weapons and participating in an unlawful assembly. Hemant Ingole, an officer at Yerwada, lodged the official complaint detailing the incident.
Several inmates suffered injuries during the altercation, with three requiring stitches for head wounds, while others sustained minor injuries on their head, back, and shoulder.
Balkrishna Kadam, Senior Police Inspector at Yerwada police station, confirmed that approximately ten to sixteen inmates have been implicated in connection with the clash. The incident unfolded in Barrack No. 8 on June 19, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures within the prison premises.
