Water Levels in Pune’s Supply Dams Rise Despite Rainfall Deficit

Despite a delayed onset of the rainy season, the dams that supply water to Pune have witnessed significant improvements in their water levels. This positive development can be attributed to the recent rainfall received in the ghat areas over the past few days.

The month of June proved to be exceptionally dry for Pune, with the city and its surrounding districts experiencing a rainfall deficit of over 33 percent. However, the monsoon gained momentum towards the end of June, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted above-average rainfall for July across the state.

As per officials, the cumulative rainfall in the district has reached 171.2 mm, which falls short of the average of 235.1 mm. The IMD’s short-term forecast consistently projected moderate to heavy rainfall in the ghat regions surrounding Pune. Consequently, areas like Lonavala, Lavale, and others witnessed substantial rainfall, while the city itself remained relatively dry. Nevertheless, these showers have led to a significant rise in the water levels of the dams that supply water to Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, displaying a notable year-on-year increase.

The Pawana Dam, which caters to Pimpri Chinchwad, is currently filled up to 24.83% of its capacity, compared to 20.57% at the same time last year. Similarly, the Khadakwasla Dam is filled up to 51.12% of its capacity, in contrast to 42.12% last year. The water levels in the Panshet Dam stand at 26.0%, compared to 23.65% last year. The Warasgaon Dam is filled up to 25.51% of its capacity, while last year it was at 19.61%. Lastly, the Temghar Dam currently holds 13.03% of its capacity, significantly higher than the 4.03% recorded at the same time last year.

These improved water levels in the dams bring a sense of relief to Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, as it ensures a more reliable water supply in the coming months. However, it is crucial to continue monitoring rainfall patterns and conserving water resources to ensure long-term sustainability in water management for the region.
