Traffic Disrupted on Old Pune-Mumbai Road and Expressway: Two Accidents Cause Severe Jams, No Casualties Reported

Pune, 26th June 2023: Traffic movement on the old Pune-Mumbai highway and Pune-Mumbai Expressway was severely disrupted due to two separate accidents that occurred on Sunday. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in either incident.

The first accident occurred around noon on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway in the Pune lane, under the jurisdiction of the Rasayani police. Heavy rainfall had significantly impacted road visibility, contributing to the accident. A container (registration number: NL01Q1072) collided with a tempo (registration number: MH09CA0849), resulting in a major traffic jam.

According to the highway police, the driver of the container lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the stationary tempo. The impact caused the tempo to slide and collide with the fence and divider before hitting an adjacent crane. The driver of the container sustained minor injuries and was immediately provided primary medical care in an IRB ambulance.

The collision caused significant damage to the tempo’s cabin, while the front section of the container separated from the rest of the vehicle. The accident resulted in a disruption of all three lanes of the expressway for approximately one and a half hours, with one lane experiencing a complete standstill. However, after an hour, traffic gradually resumed from the first lane.

In the second incident, a gas tanker owned by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) overturned on the Pune-Mumbai highway due to the driver losing control of the vehicle on Sunday morning. The incident occurred near the Madhukarrao Pawar bridge.

Upon receiving news of the accident, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s fire brigade team, accompanied by 50 police personnel, promptly arrived at the scene. Measures were taken to ensure the safe transfer of the gas from the overturned tanker. The incident had a significant impact on traffic along the old highway, leading to delays and diversions.
