Pune Braces for Heavy Rainfall Till Wednesday: Weather Alert and Safety Precautions Advised

Pune, 25th June 2023: After a prolonged delay, the monsoon rains have finally arrived in Pune, drenching the city with light to moderate showers since Saturday (24th). The wet weather is expected to persist until Wednesday (28th), with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall in the Ghatmathya area of Pune district during this period.

The progression of the monsoon was impeded by Cyclone Biperjoy, which recently traversed the Arabian Sea. However, following the cyclone’s retreat last week, favorable conditions paved the way for the monsoon’s advancement. In a rare occurrence, the monsoon covered 90 percent of the country, including Maharashtra, within a span of 24 hours on Saturday.

Over the past 48 hours, Pune city has experienced continuous rainfall, and this pattern is expected to persist for the next four days. Residents of Pune are advised to carry raincoats and umbrellas when venturing outdoors, as selected areas may encounter moderate to heavy rainfall.

As of now, the Pune area has recorded 34.9 millimeters of rain this season, which falls short of the average rainfall of approximately 123.3 mm for this time of the year. However, it is anticipated that this deficit of 88.4 mm will reduce in the final week of the monsoon season.

Since the onset of the monsoon on Saturday, Pashan has reported the highest rainfall in Pune city. Within the past 24 hours until Sunday morning, 21.1 mm of rain was recorded in Pashan. On Saturday, the city received an average rainfall of 14 millimeters. Although Sunday’s rainfall was slightly lower than Saturday’s, an average of 6.4 millimeters of rain fell during the day.

In light of the heavy rainfall, it is important for residents to take necessary precautions. Some safety measures to consider include avoiding travel to hilly areas for tourism, exercising caution while driving on slippery roads, being mindful of potholes and standing water, and seeking shelter in a safe place during periods of heavy rainfall.

Here is the rainfall data for various locations in Pune:
