Residents Express Concerns Over PMC’s Inaction on Dangerous Tree Branches

Pune, 26th June 2023: Residents of Dixit Society on Law College Road are expressing their frustration as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) allegedly fails to take action on dangerously hanging branches of a 50-year-old mango tree located on their premises.

Residents claim that despite multiple appeals, the PMC has not responded to their requests for the trimming of the tree branches, which pose a potential risk to the surroundings. However, the PMC has refuted these allegations, stating that they have not received any pending requests regarding this matter.

According to concerned citizens, a letter dated August 12, 2021, was sent to the PMC requesting the removal of five branches, each measuring about five meters in length. These branches were identified as potential hazards, but no action has been taken thus far.

The mango tree stands at a height of nine meters within the Dixit Society premises. CS Dixit, a resident of the society, expressed concerns saying, “The authorities have taken no action yet. With the arrival of the monsoon, there is a real risk of the tree branches collapsing. I sincerely hope that these branches will be trimmed to prevent any potential damage.”

Tejaswini Bhonsle, a senior citizen from a neighboring society, also voiced her frustrations, stating, “Despite making the request several years ago, the PMC continues to delay taking action. The branches of the tree are obstructing my windows, and the tree itself is leaning heavily on one side. Immediate action is necessary to address this pressing issue.”

In response, Nishikant Raut of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) clarified, “We have not received any information from the PMC regarding the removal of cables in the specified vicinity. We coordinate with the PMC’s Garden Department when they require our cooperation. It is important to follow proper procedures before trimming or removing a tree, ensuring that electric cables are safely shut off in advance.”

Rajesh Gurram, the tree officer of PMC’s Garden Department in Warje Karvenagar, commented, “Based on the complaints we have received, there are no pending requests with us. However, if residents believe there are hazardous trees in their vicinity, we encourage them to promptly inform us. Residents need to follow up on their complaints and remain engaged in the process.”
