Pune Dams Witness Declining Water Levels, Raising Concerns for Future Supply

Decrease in Water Reservoirs’ Capacity Sparks Worries Amidst Potential Water Shortages

Pune News: The water levels in Pune’s crucial dams have recorded a significant decrease, raising concerns about the city’s future water supply. As of now, the combined storage capacity of the four dams stands at only 45.90 per cent, indicating a notable drop from last year’s level of 54.17 per cent.

According to officials, the current storage level amounts to 13.38 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet), a decrease from the previous year’s 15.80 TMC. This decrease has prompted alarm among authorities regarding potential water shortages in the near future.

During a recent meeting of Pune Municipal Corporation officials, District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar addressed concerns but advised against implementing water cuts for Pune city. Instead, he emphasized the need to address water supply complaints in areas experiencing low-pressure supply.

Official records reveal specific figures for each dam: Khadakwasla reservoir stands at 54.39 per cent, holding 1.07 TMC, Panshet at 48.10 per cent with 5.12 TMC, Temghar at 9.11 per cent with 0.34 TMC, and Warasgaon at 53.40 per cent with 6.85 TMC.

Amidst the escalating situation, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Supriya Sule criticized the government’s response, accusing them of neglecting the drought-like conditions prevailing in Maharashtra. Sule emphasized the urgency of implementing effective drought management measures, including the provision of fodder camps and water tankers, particularly in Baramati and across Maharashtra.
