Savitribai Phule Pune University Takes Proactive Measures to Address Mentor Exploitation in Research Community

In a proactive response to concerns of exploitation and harassment faced by research candidates, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has rolled out a mechanism for lodging complaints against PhD guides. With the launch of the dedicated ‘PhD Tracking System’ website, SPPU aims to streamline the PhD process and ensure accountability, allowing research candidates to register complaints anonymously if they encounter any form of mentor misconduct.

Initiative Background:

The move follows recent revelations of a guiding professor found guilty of accepting bribes to manipulate PhD thesis submissions and approvals. Despite these incidents, SPPU observed a reluctance among research candidates to report mentor exploitation, fearing repercussions on their academic careers.

Dr. Parag Kalkar’s Statement:

Dr. Parag Kalkar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, underscored the significance of addressing these concerns to create a conducive academic environment. The newly launched website serves as a direct channel for research candidates to voice grievances, offering confidentiality to safeguard complainants’ identities.

Future Enhancements:

To further enhance the PhD process, SPPU has initiated a survey among research candidates to gather feedback and insights. Analysis of survey responses will inform necessary improvements on the website, aiming to streamline the PhD journey and uphold the rights of research candidates.
