ABVP Protests Against Arrested Medical College Dean, PMC Clarifies Its Role

In a strong display of student activism, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has organized a protest at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demanding stringent action against the dean of the PMC-run Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College. The dean was recently arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding a bribe from a student in exchange for admission. The ABVP is set to gather at the PMC premises to demand accountability and transparency in the investigation.

The case has prompted widespread outrage, as educational institutions are supposed to be sanctuaries of learning and ethical conduct. The ABVP’s demand for strict action reflects their commitment to uphold the integrity of educational institutions and ensure that students are not subjected to unfair practices.

In response to the protests, the PMC officials have issued a clarification asserting that the PMC has no direct involvement in the admission process of the medical college. They have pointed out that a separate trust was established to oversee the operations of the college, and the rights and responsibilities related to the admission process were entrusted to the college dean. The PMC’s role was primarily limited to providing essential infrastructure and facilities to the college.

According to reports, PMC officials have alleged that the trust members have not maintained transparent communication with the civic body over the past two years. This lack of transparency raises questions about the management and functioning of the institution and highlights the need for accountability measures.

The structure of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College includes the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation as its president, along with 20 members representing various political parties and municipal officers. However, due to pending municipal elections, the absence of a president has seemingly allowed the dean to wield decision-making authority independently.
