The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has sounded the alarm on water wastage, cautioning residents against the misuse of drinking water and announcing stringent measures to curb the practice.
In a bid to conserve precious water resources, PCMC officials have announced that show-cause notices will be issued to residents caught using drinking water for non-essential purposes such as washing vehicles, houses, streets, or societies. Repeat offenders will face severe repercussions, including the disconnection of water supply.
Presently, residents in Pimpri-Chinchwad receive water supply on alternate days, highlighting the pressing need for judicious water usage in the region.
Shekhar Singh, the municipal commissioner of PCMC, has emphasized the importance of adopting water-saving practices, urging housing societies to utilize alternative water sources such as sewage treatment plants and borewells for activities like irrigation and gardening, thus preserving drinking water for essential needs.
Singh further emphasized the potential water scarcity risks, particularly if the monsoon arrives late. To mitigate such risks, he stressed the immediate need for responsible water usage and the avoidance of wasteful practices.
PCMC officials have reassured the public of an adequate water stock in dams, similar to previous years, with regular reviews conducted to assess the water supply situation and make informed decisions regarding water management strategies, including potential water cuts.
Looking ahead, the civic body has outlined plans to transition to daily water supply by 2025, contingent upon meeting additional water demands from the Bhama Askhed dam. Presently, Pimpri Chinchwad receives approximately 510 to 520 MLD (million liters per day) from the Pavana dam and around 75 MLD from the Andra dam.
