Maharashtra Establishes High-Power Committee to Oversee Metro Projects

In a significant move aimed at enhancing efficiency and coordination in metro rail project execution, the Maharashtra state government has inaugurated a permanent high-power committee tasked with overseeing all metro projects in the state.

This pivotal decision marks a departure from the previous practice of constituting separate committees under the chief secretary for individual metro projects, thereby consolidating decision-making processes and optimizing resource utilization.

The newly formed committee, chaired by the chief secretary, comprises key officials from pivotal departments including urban development, finance, planning, and law and justice, among others. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive representation and expertise in addressing the multifaceted challenges associated with metro rail infrastructure development.

Vijay Chaudhari, deputy secretary of the state government’s urban development department, issued an official order on March 15, delineating the committee’s overarching responsibilities. These include formulating and deliberating on policy matters pertaining to metro project construction and operation, approving land use alterations and concessions, ensuring timely disbursement of the state’s financial contributions, exploring viable financial models outlined in project reports, and establishing clear timelines for project implementation.

Moreover, the committee is vested with the authority to adjudicate on issues transcending the state government’s jurisdiction and oversee project amendments mandated by central and state governments, thus fostering a cohesive and synchronized approach to metro project governance.

Officials assert that the establishment of this centralized committee heralds a new era of efficiency and effectiveness in metro rail project management across Maharashtra. By fostering collaboration, expediting decision-making, and fostering accountability, the committee aims to expedite project implementation while ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks and best practices.

As Maharashtra embarks on a transformative journey to bolster its urban transportation infrastructure, the high-power committee stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to realizing sustainable, accessible, and integrated metro networks in Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, and beyond.
