Delhi’s Desperate Measure: Schools Prepone Winter Break Amid Air Pollution Crisis

Amid deteriorating air quality in the National Capital, the Delhi government has taken a significant step to safeguard the health of its students and teachers. In response to the alarming levels of air pollution, the government announced on Wednesday that the winter break in schools has been preponed and will be observed from November 9 to 18.

The decision comes as a result of the implementation of GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan) measures due to the ‘severe’ category of air quality that has been prevailing in Delhi for several days. By preponing the winter break, the authorities aim to close schools completely and ensure that both children and teachers can stay at home, away from the harmful effects of air pollution.

As per the government’s order, all schools in Delhi will observe the winter break from November 9 (tomorrow) to November 18 (Saturday), and this information will be promptly conveyed to parents.

The need for such a measure is underscored by the persistent ‘severe’ air quality in Delhi, which poses significant health risks, especially to children who are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution. This move is seen as a proactive response to protect the well-being of the younger population.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai addressed the issue in a press conference, stating that they have issued an order to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to run the smog tower at full capacity starting from tomorrow. This action is a direct response to the ongoing air pollution crisis that has left Delhi residents grappling with hazardous air quality for an extended period.

Rai also took the opportunity to criticize BJP-led state governments, alleging that they have been inactive in addressing pollution issues. He went on to express his concern, stating, “It seems that pollution is not a serious issue for BJP-governed states. They only make statements on pollution but don’t do anything on the ground.”

The preponement of the winter break in Delhi’s schools is a clear indication of the severity of the air pollution crisis and the urgent need to protect the health and well-being of students and teachers. It is a step in the right direction to ensure that young minds can continue their education in a safe and healthy environment.
