Delhi Swelters as Mercury Hits 39.1°C: IMD Records Hottest Day of the Year

Capital Braces for Scorching Temperatures Amidst Forecasts of Rain Relief

Delhi experienced scorching heat on Wednesday as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded the hottest day of the year, with temperatures soaring to 39.1 degrees Celsius in the national capital. This significant spike in mercury levels surpassed the previous highest maximum temperature recorded this year, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave gripping the region.

According to IMD data, the second-highest maximum temperature was observed on March 9th, reaching 38 degrees Celsius. Wednesday’s temperature departure from the season’s average was notable, with the maximum temperature soaring four notches above normal. Conversely, the minimum temperature stood at 17 degrees Celsius, marking three notches below the season’s average, according to the data.

Forecasts indicate that the heatwave is expected to persist, with temperatures anticipated to climb close to 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as Delhi may receive much-needed relief in the form of rainfall on April 13th and 14th, accompanied by thunderstorms, as stated by Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist and head of the Regional Meteorological Centre.

Looking ahead, the weather office predicts a partly cloudy sky for Thursday, with expected maximum and minimum temperatures of 39 and 19 degrees Celsius, respectively. As Delhiites brace themselves for the sweltering heat, the prospect of impending rainfall offers a ray of hope amidst the scorching temperatures.
