Delhi Government Declares Dry Days: Liquor Sales Prohibited on Religious Festivals and Election Period

Ensuring Sobriety and Lawfulness During Significant Events in the National Capital Territory

In a move aimed at maintaining sobriety and lawfulness during significant events, the Delhi government has announced a series of dry days spanning from April to June. These dry days, coinciding with religious festivals and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, will see liquor sales prohibited across the National Capital Territory (NCT).

The order, issued by the Excise Department of the Delhi government, outlines specific dates when liquor shops will remain closed:

  • 11th April: Eid-ul-Fitr
  • 17th April: Ram Navami
  • 21st April: Mahavir Jayanti
  • 23rd May: Buddha Purnima
  • 17th June: Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha)

During these periods, residents and visitors alike are advised that liquor shops will not be operational to adhere to the dry day regulations.

The imposition of dry days extends beyond religious festivals to encompass the Lok Sabha elections and their aftermath:

  • Dry Days During Lok Sabha Elections: From 24th April, 6 PM, to 26th April, 6 PM, liquor shops within 100 meters of the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border in Baghpat, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar districts will remain closed.
  • Dry Days During Election Period in Delhi:
    • Before Polling: From 6 PM on 23rd May to 6 PM on 25th May, liquor sale will be prohibited, including a 48-hour period surrounding the conclusion of voting.
    • Election Result Day: A full-day dry day has been announced for 4th June, 2024, in anticipation of the Lok Sabha election results.

These measures are implemented to ensure law and order and foster a peaceful and fair electoral process in Delhi and its neighboring regions.
