Legal Setback: Supreme Court Affirms Arrest of Tamil Nadu Minister and Wife in Money Laundering Case

New Delhi, 7th August 2023: The Supreme Court, on Monday, rejected the appeals made by Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji and his wife, Megala, challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to uphold their arrest in a money laundering case. The apex court affirmed the legality of the arrest, marking a significant development in the ongoing case. The matter was heard by a bench comprising Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh, who also referred the issue of permissible police custody beyond the initial case to a larger bench. The decision has extended the custody duration to 15 days.

Balaji, despite being arrested on June 14, continues to maintain his position as a minister without portfolio in the Tamil Nadu government. The allegations against him and his wife revolve around their alleged involvement in a cash-for-jobs scam within the state’s transport department.
