In a significant development for design education, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, in collaboration with Aalto University, Finland, and The School of Design, RMIT, Melbourne, inaugurated the BITS Design School in Mumbai on Thursday, February 15, 2024. Situated over an expansive area of 63 acres, the design school aims to redefine design education with a transdisciplinary and competency-based approach.

Admissions for the four-year Bachelors in Design (Honours) course will commence on February 26, 2024. The program will be followed by a master’s degree program and a faculty development program for design students during the subsequent two years of the master’s program.

The BITS Design School plans to offer five specialized streams for specialization in the second year of the program. These streams include physical product design, digital product design (UI/UX), human-centered design, experience design, and visual design.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chancellor of BITS Pilani, emphasized the increasing importance of design in addressing the complexities of the new age. He stated, “Designing is increasingly pivotal in addressing the complexities of the new age. BITS Design School will reimagine design education with a bold transdisciplinary, competency-based approach and embrace avenues where design can positively impact people, businesses, and the world.”

Birla highlighted that BITS Pilani, with its rich legacy of academic excellence and transdisciplinary thinking, is uniquely positioned to nurture a new generation of leaders who will use design to create value and solve problems for a better world.

The BITS Design School is set to provide students with exposure to international visiting faculties and marquee Indian faculties from the top design schools globally. This collaboration ensures a diverse and enriching learning experience for the students.

As the BITS Design School opens its doors to aspiring designers, it promises to set new benchmarks in design education, fostering creativity, innovation, and global perspectives.
