The Rising Epidemic: Back Pain Surges Among Children, Linked to School Backpack Weights

In an era dominated by technology, where sedentary habits and improper posture are on the rise, back pain is no longer limited to adults. Children are now grappling with this health issue, with factors such as heavy school backpacks, extended periods of sitting, and improper use of electronic devices contributing to the problem.

Dr Pramod Bhor, Director of Orthopedics and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Vashi, emphasizes that back pain in children is not solely related to spinal issues but is also influenced by poor posture, carrying heavy backpacks, and excessive screen time. Dr Bhor advocates for a mindful approach, recommending specific weight limits for school backpacks based on a child’s age.

According to Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, a child’s backpack should not exceed 15% of their body weight to prevent back pain. Dr Bhor provides further guidance, suggesting weights of 1.5 kg to 2 kg for children in classes 1 and 2, 2 kg to 3 kg for classes 3 to 5, 3 kg to 4 kg for classes 6 to 8, and 5 kg for classes 9 and 10. Emphasizing the importance of lighter backpacks for normal growth, Dr Bhor highlights the need for informed choices in backpack selection.

Dr Nitish Arora, Consultant Trauma, Limb Reconstruction, Deformity Correction & Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon from Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, stresses the significance of proper backpack usage. Dual straps and even weight distribution on both shoulders are crucial to prevent strain. Dr Arora advises against backpacks hanging below the waist region, emphasizing that uneven weight distribution can lead to muscle fatigue and discomfort.

Beyond backpack considerations, maintaining good posture is paramount in reducing back pain among children. Dr Bhor advocates for promoting proper sitting positions at home and consulting with doctors about vitamin D and calcium supplements for enhanced bone health.

To combat the rising incidence of back pain in children, experts recommend lifestyle adjustments, increased physical activity, and parental involvement. Encouraging healthier habits can contribute to a significant reduction in back pain cases among the younger population.
