Regional Mental Hospital Enhances Treatment Arsenal with rTMS Therapy Machine

Patients grappling with mental illnesses such as depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) at Pune’s Regional Mental Hospital (RMH) in Yerawada will now have access to advanced treatment through Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) therapy.

The recent installation of the rTMS machine marks a significant stride in the hospital’s efforts to provide prompt and effective care to its patients. Funded by the district planning committee, this state-of-the-art machine represents a substantial investment, totaling around ₹71 lakhs, aimed at enhancing therapeutic options for mental health disorders.

rTMS therapy offers a non-invasive approach to treatment, employing magnetic pulses to target specific regions of the brain associated with mental health conditions. Dr. Sandeep Mahamuni, a psychologist at RMH, elucidated on the modulatory effects of rTMS on brain activity, noting its potential applications in treating chronic depression, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders.

Unlike traditional electric shock therapy, rTMS therapy offers a gentler alternative, eliminating the need for anesthesia and catering to patients who may not be suitable candidates for procedures like Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). With each session lasting approximately 20 minutes, patients can receive treatment on an outpatient basis, promoting convenience and minimizing hospitalization durations.

In addition to the rTMS machine, RMH has also acquired two advanced Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) machines, aimed at streamlining therapy sessions and ensuring optimal patient care. Dr. Sunil Patil, the medical superintendent at RMH, highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the new ECT machines, which monitor both brain and heart functions during therapy sessions, enhancing safety and efficacy.

The integration of rTMS therapy into RMH’s treatment regimen underscores the hospital’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies and evidence-based practices in mental healthcare. With a patient population exceeding 950 individuals, RMH’s expansion of treatment modalities signifies a proactive approach towards addressing the complex needs of individuals grappling with mental health disorders.

As RMH continues to expand its treatment capabilities, stakeholders remain optimistic about the positive impact of advanced therapies like rTMS in improving patient outcomes and fostering greater resilience within the community.
