Pune’s Pimpri Chinchwad Chemists Grapple with Eye Drop Shortage Amidst Rising Conjunctivitis Cases

Pune, August 8th, 2023: With an alarming surge in cases of conjunctivitis across various districts in Maharashtra, the city of Pune, which experienced a significant outbreak last month, now finds itself grappling with a shortage of essential eye drops. Chemists in Pimpri Chinchwad, a prominent locality, have raised concerns over a dwindling supply of eye drops from distributors, despite a substantial demand from the public.

According to local chemists, the supply of antibiotics eye drops from distributors has been nearly 50 percent below the demand for the past few days. Although medical professionals are adhering to protocols and dispensing eye drops only with valid prescriptions, the shortage persists as the instances of conjunctivitis cases have risen unexpectedly in recent days.

The local chemists, while acknowledging the challenge, hold optimism for an imminent solution. They have indicated that manufacturing companies are ramping up their production to meet the escalated demand. Additionally, there is a glimmer of hope as the number of new cases has started to decrease, which may alleviate the pressure on the supply chain.

Conjunctivitis, often referred to as “pink eye,” is an infectious condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It can be caused by various factors, including viruses, bacteria, allergens, and irritants.
