Pune: Timely Construction of Rockfall Barrier Walls by Central Railway in Karjat-Lonavla Ghat Averts Potential Disaster

Pune/Mumbai, 2nd July 2023: A potential disaster was averted on Friday (30th June) in the Karjat-Lonavala section of the Central Railway when a landslide occurred. The presence of a rockfall barrier wall between Monkey Hill and Thakurwadi stations played a critical role in preventing any mishaps.

The Central Railway had undertaken extensive preparations prior to the monsoon season to ensure the safety of railway traffic in the Ghat section. Despite heavy rainfall measuring 185 mm on 30th June 2023 in the Karjat-Lonavala Ghat section, the rockfall barrier wall, constructed at a height of 60 meters, effectively trapped 2.5 meters of boulders resulting from the landslide.

The rockfall barriers proved to be vital in preventing the rocks from falling onto the railroad tracks. A team of approximately 50 laborers worked diligently to clear the debris and soil that had accumulated within the barrier.

Officials have emphasized the importance of installing rockfall barriers and wall fences spanning around 300 meters in length at identified locations in Karjat and Kasara Ghats. These measures have proven instrumental in safeguarding the tracks and trains from potential damage. Additionally, a net measuring approximately 550 square meters has been installed in sensitive areas, further enhancing safety measures. Furthermore, the Central Railway has taken steps to stabilize approximately 160 meters of hill cutting bank at vulnerable locations.

The successful deployment of rockfall barriers and other safety measures highlights the commitment of the Central Railway to ensure the smooth and secure operation of train services in the challenging Ghat section. By proactively addressing the risks posed by landslides, the railway authorities have effectively mitigated the potential dangers, safeguarding the lives of passengers and preventing disruptions in train services.

As the monsoon season progresses, the Central Railway will continue to monitor and maintain these safety measures, ensuring the ongoing safety of the Karjat-Lonavala railway section.
