Mumbai Pune Expressway Implements New Speed Limits for Enhanced Safety

In a bid to enhance safety and traffic management on the Mumbai Pune Expressway, authorities have introduced revised speed limits, particularly aimed at ghat sections where challenges abound.

Updated Speed Limits: The recent adjustments in speed limits come as part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks and ensure smoother traffic flow. Spearheaded by Sukhwinder Singh, Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Maharashtra, these modifications address specific concerns faced by commuters navigating through ghat areas. Here’s a breakdown of the key updates:

M-1 Vehicles (Cars, SUVs, etc.):

  • Flat Areas: Speed limit increased to 100 km/h.
  • Ghat Areas: Speed limit set at 60 km/h.

M-2 and M-3 Vehicles (Passenger vehicles carrying nine or more passengers):

  • Flat Areas: Speed limit capped at 80 km/h.
  • Ghat Areas: Speed restricted to 40 km/h.

N Category Vehicles (Goods vehicles):

  • Flat Areas: Speed limit maintained at 80 km/h.
  • Ghat Areas: Speed restricted to 40 km/h.

Insights from Survey: The decision to revise speed limits stemmed from a comprehensive 15-day survey conducted by multiple authorities, including the State Highway, Pune division, Raigad zone, Panvel police, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and IRB Infra Development. The survey uncovered the inherent risks associated with low-speed travel, highlighting the potential for accidents in such scenarios.

These revised speed limits aim not only to improve safety but also to streamline traffic movement along the Mumbai Pune Expressway, ensuring a smoother and more efficient commuting experience for all travelers.
