Maharashtra Prepares for Below-Average Rainfall: Monsoon Forecast Indicates Reduced Disturbance

Skymet and Meteorological Department Anticipate Marginal Increase in Monsoon Rainfall

The anticipation of reduced rainfall looms over Maharashtra and several other states as Skymet Weather and the Meteorological Department forecast below-average monsoon conditions for the upcoming months.

According to Skymet Weather’s predictions, the monsoon disturbance is expected to reach only 102 percent, indicating a marginal increase of 5 percent above the average. While this forecast signifies fertility-friendly conditions, the overall rainfall is likely to be lower than ideal for agricultural activities.

The Meteorological Department categorizes rainfall between 96 to 104 percent as above average or normal, crucial for sustaining agriculture and addressing water scarcity concerns. With the average rainfall during these months recorded at 868.6 mm, any deviation from the norm could have significant implications for farming communities.

Skymet Weather’s forecast projects good rainfall for 23 states, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. However, eight states, including Assam, are expected to witness below-average rainfall, with regions like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Meghalaya facing potential deficits.

The shortfall in rainfall is anticipated primarily during the months of June and July, with conditions expected to normalize later in the monsoon season. Skymet’s earlier prediction in January hinted at a normal monsoon, indicating that regions experiencing initial dry spells may witness eventual normalization in rainfall patterns.

Despite the forecast of reduced rainfall, there remains optimism regarding the overall outlook for the monsoon season. Adequate rainfall, even if slightly below average, is expected to contribute positively to agriculture and help alleviate water shortages across various regions.
