PCMC Boosts Water Infrastructure: 30 New Overhead Tanks to Address Growing Demand

Pimpri Chinchwad, a city witnessing a rapid increase in population, is proactively addressing the rising demand for water by implementing four schemes in the last 18 months. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is set to spend Rs 238 crore on these initiatives, receiving around 42 crores in funds from the Central Government. The projects aim to enhance water storage and distribution capacity, with a focus on constructing 30 new overhead water tanks across different phases.

PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh emphasized the municipality’s commitment to meeting the basic needs of the growing population while providing essential infrastructure. He stated, “The municipal administration will always be committed to providing abundant water to the citizens within the PCMC limits.”

Pradeep Jambhale Patil, Additional Commissioner, PCMC, highlighted the increased demand for water within the municipal limits due to population growth. The ongoing 238-crore scheme, initiated 18 months ago, is progressing rapidly. It involves the construction of main water channels and large tanks to enhance water capacity, considering the projected population increase by 2041.

The PCMC is actively implementing measures to prevent water leakage in the city. As part of the government’s ‘Amrut 1 Yojana,’ the water supply department has laid high-density polyethylene (HDPE) water pipes with leakage prevention in 60 percent of the entire area. Additionally, medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) water pipes have been used to reconnect 1,25,000 old tap joints. The corporation aims to stop future water leakage by laying high-quality pipelines in the city’s water channels.
