Mumbai Coastal Road Opening: Light Vehicles and Buses Welcome, But No Heavy Traffic Allowed

In anticipation of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project’s south lane opening for passenger traffic on March 12, the Mumbai traffic police have laid out specific guidelines for the types of vehicles allowed on the 9.5km stretch. The plan stipulates that only light motor vehicles—four-wheelers and passenger buses—will be permitted on the south lane during designated hours.

As per the schedule, the south lane of the Coastal Road will be accessible to vehicular traffic between 8 am and 8 pm from Monday to Friday. Entry points include Bindu Madhav Junction on Khan Abdul Gafar Khan Marg, Rajni Patel Chowk or Lotus Junction, and Amarsons Garden. Exit points are designated at Amarsons Garden and the Princess Street flyover on Marine Drive. Notably, vehicles can enter the Coastal Road at Bindu Madhav Chowk only between 8 am and 5 pm.

In a bid to ensure the safety and efficiency of the traffic flow, Mumbai traffic police have explicitly stated that pedestrians will not be allowed on the 9.5km stretch of the Coastal Road. Additionally, vehicles are strictly prohibited from stopping anywhere on the high-speed route for photography or videography purposes, with punitive action planned for violations.

The traffic police notification further outlines the prohibition of heavy vehicles, trailers, mixers, tractors, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, animal-drawn carts, and handcarts on the Coastal Road stretch. To enhance safety measures, speed limits have been set for vehicles traversing the road, with speeds capped at 80 km per hour on straight stretches, 60 km per hour in the tunnel, and 40 km per hour on turns.
