DIAL Awaits BCAS Nod for Airside Baggage Transfer Between T1 and T3 at Delhi Airport

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) is poised to revolutionize passenger convenience at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) by introducing airside transfer of checked-in baggage between Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 3 (T3). This initiative, pending approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), aims to simplify the transfer process for passengers with connecting flights between these terminals.

Current Baggage Transfer Process

At IGIA, international flights are primarily handled at T3, while T1 and T2 cater to domestic flights. Presently, passengers arriving at T1 must manually carry their checked-in baggage to T3 if they have a connecting international flight. This process can be cumbersome and time-consuming, especially for those with tight connection schedules.

Proposed Airside Baggage Transfer System

Under the new proposal, once DIAL secures approval, passengers will no longer need to transport their checked-in baggage between terminals. The airside transfer system will handle baggage movement seamlessly, enhancing the overall passenger experience. This system will also apply to international passengers landing at T3 and transferring to domestic flights at T1, although specific procedures for customs clearance will need to be established.

Benefits of the New System

The implementation of airside baggage transfer will significantly streamline the transfer process at IGIA. Passengers can look forward to a more relaxed travel experience, without the hassle of manually transferring their baggage. This improvement is particularly beneficial given the spatial separation of T1 and T3, which currently necessitates road travel between the terminals.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Future Plans

DIAL is continuously working on upgrading the airport infrastructure to accommodate the growing passenger traffic, which is projected to reach a capacity of 100 to 105 million. The expanded T1 terminal is expected to be operational by June, further enhancing the airport’s capacity and efficiency.

To facilitate seamless transit between T1, T2, and T3, DIAL plans to introduce an Automated People Mover (APM) or air train. This will provide quick and efficient transportation for passengers moving between terminals, further improving the airport’s operational dynamics.

Increasing Air Traffic and Airline Expansion

As air passenger traffic continues to rise, airlines are expanding their fleets and networks to meet the burgeoning demand. These developments underscore the need for more efficient and passenger-friendly airport operations. The proposed airside baggage transfer system is a step in this direction, aligning with DIAL’s commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
