SC Grants Bail to NCP Leader Nawab Malik for Two Months on Medical Grounds

Pune, 11th August 2023: In a significant development, the Supreme Court has granted bail to Nawab Malik, the former Maharashtra minister and senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), on medical grounds. This decision comes after Nawab Malik spent over 18 months in custody following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represented the ED, did not oppose the bail.

Kapil Sibal, who appeared as Nawab Malik’s counsel in court, highlighted that his client has been undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment for the past 16 months. Nawab Malik is currently receiving medical care at Criticare Hospital. The court’s decision to grant him bail for a period of two months takes into consideration his health condition and the medical treatment he requires.

In response to the bail application, the court ordered, “As regards the main petition, let the counter affidavit be filed in five weeks, rejoinder thereafter within 3 weeks. List after 10 weeks.” This decision reflects the court’s acknowledgment of Nawab Malik’s health concerns and the need for proper medical attention.

It’s important to note that Nawab Malik’s arrest by the ED was in connection with a money laundering case linked to the notorious underworld figure Dawood Ibrahim. The bail granted by the Supreme Court allows Nawab Malik to seek necessary medical treatment while being temporarily released from custody.
