Conflict Erupts as Local Taxi Drivers Coerce Tourists to Opt for Costlier Rides, Undermining GoaMiles Service
Recent incidents in Goa have shed light on the challenges faced by tourists when utilizing the state-run app-based cab service, GoaMiles, amidst resistance and intimidation tactics from local taxi drivers.
A viral video capturing the confrontations between passengers and taxi drivers has sparked outrage, showcasing the pressure exerted on travelers to cancel affordable GoaMiles rides in favor of significantly costlier local taxis charging inflated rates.
The passengers’ perplexity at the insistence on abandoning the budget-friendly GoaMiles service underscores the persistent transportation issues plaguing tourists in Goa. Despite the introduction of GoaMiles in 2018 by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation to regulate fares and offer affordable transportation alternatives, conflicts persist due to opposition from non-affiliated taxi drivers.
The resistance stems from perceived threats to the income of local taxi drivers, leading to boycotts and intimidation tactics against GoaMiles users. Such incidents underscore the urgent need for interventions to address the conflicts and ensure a seamless travel experience for tourists in the region.
One individual recounted their experience, lamenting the exploitation faced when opting for GoaMiles over local taxis. “I took a cab from south Goa to the Airport. GoaMiles charged me around 600, while local cabs demanded 1200. The GoaMiles driver even suggested we walk a short distance to avoid nuisance from local taxi drivers. Customer exploitation by local taxi drivers must cease,” they shared.
