Inheritance or Adoption? The Kolhapur Royal Conundrum

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Mandlik sparks debate over adoption claims regarding Kolhapur’s royal heir.

PUNE – The political arena in Kolhapur ignited with controversy as Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Mandlik stirred the pot by questioning the legitimacy of Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati’s lineage, alleging adoption. The assertions made during a public rally in Nesari, Chandgarh taluka, have sparked a heated debate surrounding the historical succession to the Kolhapur royal throne.

Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati, a descendant of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, holds the esteemed position as the head of the Kolhapur royal family. However, Mandlik’s claims challenge this legacy, asserting that the current Maharaj is not the rightful heir but rather an adopted member.

During the rally, Mandlik boldly stated, “The current Maharaj of Kolhapur is not the true heir, he is adopted. You and I (citizens), who possess the ideology of Shahu-Phule-Ambedkar, are the real heirs.” These assertions, backed by references to historical sources, have triggered a wave of controversy and skepticism within the political landscape of Kolhapur.

While reiterating his stance in subsequent engagements, Mandlik emphasized the authenticity of his claims, citing references from published materials. However, he maintained that his intent was not to disparage his Congress opponent, expressing willingness to retract his statements if proven wrong.

In response, Congress leader Satej Patil condemned Mandlik’s remarks, labeling them as insults to the esteemed lineage of the Kolhapur royal family. Asserting that such comments would not be tolerated by the people of Kolhapur, Patil underscored the significance of respecting the historical legacy and heritage of the region.

Adding his perspective to the unfolding controversy, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar highlighted the historical precedent of adoptions within royal families. While refraining from commenting directly on Mandlik’s statements, Pawar emphasized that adoption has been a customary practice, granting legitimacy to the adopted individuals as representatives of the royal lineage.

As the debate rages on, the assertions made by Mandlik have injected a new dimension into the electoral discourse of Kolhapur, prompting scrutiny and speculation over the historical narrative surrounding the succession to the royal throne.
