Backlash as Government Reverses Police Leave Encashment Benefit

In a surprising turn of events, the government’s decision to cancel the concession of encashment of additional earned leave for police officers has ignited dissatisfaction among the state police force. The move, which has been in place since 1989, provided a compensatory measure for the demanding work schedules of officers.

The decision to revoke the benefit has resulted in a wave of discontent, with officers expressing their unhappiness on social media platforms. The additional earned leave of 15 days, along with the provision to encash leave upon retirement, served as a form of compensation for police officers who work extended hours and have limited holidays compared to other government departments.

Unlike their counterparts in other sectors, police personnel often find themselves on duty during weekends, festivals, celebrations, anniversaries, and other government holidays. The unique work structure, including extended duty hours during sessions, festival-related duties, and security arrangements, restricts their ability to take regular leaves.

The cancellation of the leave encashment concession has triggered a strong reaction from the police force, arguing that it was a crucial form of compensation for their demanding work schedules and the sacrifices they make, such as missing festivals and family time.

Rashmi Shukla, Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, has also expressed her concerns, highlighting the challenges faced by the police force and urging the government to reconsider the decision. Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, has been called upon to intervene in the matter, with officers hoping for his understanding of governance issues.

In a surprising development, the government has honored the request and reversed its decision. The cancellation has been officially acknowledged in a post by Rashmi Shukla on social media, thanking Devendra Fadnavis, the Hon. Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, for his intervention in the matter.
