State Government Eyes Changes: Top Municipal Officers Brace for Impending Transfers

The Maharashtra state government is poised to make significant administrative changes, with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Commissioner IS Chahal and Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Commissioner Vikram Kumar expected to be transferred soon.

Shrikant Deshpande, the state chief electoral officer, confirmed that the move aligns with the transfer policy, citing a letter from the election commission forwarded to the general administration of the state government on February 22 for further action. Other officers facing potential transfers from BMC include Additional Municipal Commissioners (AMC) P Velarasu and Ashwini Bhide, having completed over three years in their current roles.

BMC Commissioner IS Chahal, who assumed the role on May 8, 2020, is likely to be relocated. Despite the political dynamics, Chahal has retained the position after the change in government, succeeding Praveen Pardeshi, who faced controversy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ashwini Bhide, an IAS officer of the 1995 batch, served as AMC and later took charge as the Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation in 2022. However, she continued overseeing the Coastal Road project. Additional Municipal Commissioner P Velarasu, an IAS officer of the 2002 batch, has been overseeing projects in the BMC since January 17, 2020.

PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar, appointed on July 12, 2020, is also in line for a potential transfer. Kavita Dwivedi, the municipal commissioner of Akola, posted on September 3, 2020, is likewise expected to undergo a relocation.

The state has initiated the search for a candidate to fill the top post at BMC. Speculation suggests that Additional Chief Secretary Bhushan Gagrani, who heads the CM secretariat, is among the contenders for the position.
