Pune’s Water Conservation Efforts: PCMC Appeals for Responsible Usage as Pavana Dam Levels Decrease

Pimpri-Chinchwad, June 17th, 2023: As the water reserves continue to diminish and the population keeps growing, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has issued an appeal to residents to use water responsibly. Over the past three and a half years, the city has implemented an alternate-day water supply system, resulting in a significant reduction in complaints related to insufficient water supply and wasteful water usage, particularly in low-lying areas.

The Pavana and Andhra Dams in Maval are the primary sources of water for the Pimpri-Chinchwad city. Presently, the municipality draws 580 million litres of water per day, with 510 million litres sourced from the Pavana Dam, 50 million litres from the Chikhli water treatment plant, and 20 million litres from the Industrial Development Corporation. The decision to implement the alternate-day water supply system was introduced on November 25, 2019, to ensure equitable distribution of water across all areas.

Despite the increasing demand, the availability of water has not kept pace with the city’s growing population, necessitating the continuation of the alternate-day water supply system. The Municipal Corporation recognizes the significance of conserving water resources and emphasizes the importance of responsible water usage.

Currently, the water storage level in the Pavana Dam stands at 20.40 percent, which is projected to be sufficient to meet the city’s water requirements until the end of July. However, this year’s water stock is lower compared to the 22.06 percent recorded during the same period last year.

“In light of the rising population and limited water availability, the alternate-day water supply schedule will be maintained,” stated Shrikant Sawane, Associate City Engineer of the Water Supply Department at the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

The PCMC’s appeal for water conservation comes as a timely reminder for residents to adopt water-saving practices in their daily lives. Simple measures such as fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and minimizing wastage can make a significant difference in preserving this valuable resource.

Moreover, the Municipal Corporation is actively exploring long-term solutions to address the water scarcity issue. Initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, and promoting awareness about water conservation are being implemented to ensure a sustainable water supply for the growing population of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The PCMC urges all residents to take an active role in conserving water and to be mindful of their water usage. By working together and adopting responsible water practices, the community can contribute to the preservation of water resources and secure a better future for generations to come.
