In a testament to her unwavering principles, the iconic Lata Mangeshkar once declined a staggering one million dollars for a mere two-hour appearance at a wedding, as revealed by her sister, Asha Bhosle. The revelation sheds light on the late singer’s steadfast commitment to her values, transcending even the lure of considerable wealth.
During an episode of the dance reality show “DID L’il Masters 5,” Asha Bhosle recounted the incident, stating, “She was offered one million dollars to sing at a wedding. They said, ‘sirf do ghante darshan dijiye (Just come for two hours and attend the wedding).’” However, Lata Mangeshkar resolutely responded, “Even if you give me five million dollars, I won’t come.”
This wasn’t an isolated incident. Asha Bhosle had previously shared a similar narrative at the inaugural Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award ceremony. Recounting an invitation to perform at a wedding with exorbitant tickets, Asha revealed, “Didi asked me, ‘Will you sing at a wedding?’ I said I won’t, and she then told the rep, ‘We will not sing even if you offer 10 crore dollars because we do not sing at weddings.’”
Despite her firm stance against singing at weddings, Lata Mangeshkar contributed to Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal’s wedding by recording the Gayatri Mantra, a Ganesh stuti, and a special message for the couple. These recordings played during the Gujarati and Hindu Vedic rituals, showcasing her willingness to contribute to auspicious occasions without compromising her principles.
