Nudging Tax Compliance: PCMC’s Innovative Approach with Meme and Reels Competitions

Pune, 18th June 2023: Following the success of a meme competition targeting property tax arrears, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced its plans to organize a reels competition to encourage citizens to pay their taxes before the June 30 deadline.

The PCMC aims to engage with citizens through social media platforms by inviting them to participate in the reels competition. Citizens who create innovative and attention-grabbing reels to promote the timely payment of property taxes will have the chance to win exciting prizes. According to Assistant Municipal Commissioner Nilesh Deshmukh, the winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and a certificate, while the two runners-up will be awarded cash prizes of Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000, along with certificates.

The objective of the competition is to appeal to citizens, particularly the younger generation, to pay their property taxes on time. PCMC recognizes the power of creative mediums such as songs, music, and acting in capturing people’s attention. Therefore, the reels competition encourages participants to utilize their imagination and produce captivating content related to the property tax levied by the PCMC.

To participate in the competition, individuals are required to post their reels on popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, using the designated hashtags #pcmcptaxreels, #ptaxreels, and #pcmctaxconcession. All participants will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation.

PCMC officials have also emphasized the various concessions available on property tax payments until June 30. These include a 5% discount for advance tax payments, as well as an additional 5% discount for online tax payments. Residential cooperative societies that have composting facilities will be eligible for a 5% discount, while those with Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) will receive an additional 3% discount. If both composting facilities and STPs are operational within a society, each member will enjoy an 8% discount. Moreover, residential societies with STP facilities and zero garbage generation will be granted a 10% discount. Overall, PCMC is offering a generous 20% discount on property taxes.

Earlier in March, the PCMC successfully organized a meme contest targeting property tax defaulters, which garnered a significant response with approximately 4,000-5,000 entries. The prize money for the reels competition remains the same as the meme contest, as per Deshmukh.

Through these creative initiatives, PCMC aims to engage citizens and create awareness about the importance of paying property taxes on time. By leveraging social media platforms and tapping into the creative talents of individuals, the corporation seeks to foster a sense of responsibility among property owners and ensure the smooth functioning of essential civic services.
