Revolutionary Surgical Breakthrough: Minimally Invasive Removal of Skull Base Tumour Through the Mouth

In an unprecedented medical feat, a 67-year-old woman in Bangalore has successfully undergone a pioneering procedure to remove a skull base tumour through her mouth. Dr. Narayana Subramaniam, Director of Head & Neck Surgery, Oncology, and Clinical Innovation at SPARSH Hospital, led the groundbreaking surgery, achieving a remarkable milestone in minimally invasive techniques.

Mangala (name changed), the patient, presented with a challenging 2×2 cm tumour behind her upper jaw, situated in the parapharyngeal space. This location, approximately 1.2 cm from the internal carotid artery and surrounded by critical cranial nerves, posed a unique challenge for surgical access.

Unlike conventional methods involving jawbone manipulation, the surgical team adopted an innovative approach. The entire procedure was performed through the mouth, removing the posterior aspect of the upper jaw bone and displacing muscles to create a corridor for complete tumour removal. This approach aimed to reduce surgical trauma, enhance recovery, and minimize the risk of complications associated with traditional techniques.

Dr. Narayana Subramaniam emphasized the novelty of the approach, stating, “This was a novel approach for a novel tumour. By devising this approach, we were able to access this tumour and remove it completely without splitting the upper or lower jaw and avoiding any incisions on the face.” The patient experienced a smooth recovery with no major complications, showcasing the success of the patient-centric and innovative approach adopted by SPARSH Hospital.

The two-and-a-half-hour procedure exemplifies SPARSH Hospital’s commitment to advancing healthcare through progressive solutions. This achievement reinforces the hospital’s dedication to providing cutting-edge, patient-centric care, particularly in complex head and neck surgeries.
