Blending Flavors and Health: The Ayurvedic Battle – Mango Shake vs. Banana Shake

When the scorching heat of summer hits us, nothing beats a refreshing drink to cool down. With an abundance of seasonal fruits available, such as mangoes, lychees, and watermelons, it’s hard to resist the temptation of indulging in a delicious fruit shake. Among the many choices, mango and banana shakes often take the spotlight as crowd favorites. These shakes not only offer a delightful taste but also boast numerous health benefits, particularly in aiding weight management due to their high fiber content. However, have you ever wondered which of the two is better for your health? Let’s delve into what Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, has to say about it.

According to Ayurvedic experts, caution should be exercised when combining fruits with milk, as this combination can sometimes lead to the production of ama, toxic by-products that can contribute to various health problems. Not all fruits are suitable for consumption with milk, and from an Ayurvedic perspective, only those fruits that are naturally sweet and fully ripe are ideal for recipes containing milk as an ingredient. Both mangoes and bananas fall into the sweet category. So, is it healthy to have a banana shake?

According to Ayurveda, the answer is no. While bananas may be sweet, their post-digestive effect is sour, making them unsuitable for consumption with milk. Ayurveda expert Dr. Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya explains in her Instagram post, “Even though bananas are sweet when ingested with milk, their post-digestive effect turns sour, so the two should not be combined.”

On the other hand, Dr. Savaliya suggests, “A ripe sweet mango may be combined with milk. It calms vata and pitta, serves as a tasty nourishing tonic, acts as an aphrodisiac, and even improves complexion. It is sweet and cooling in nature.” This indicates that mango shakes can be consumed without any concerns, but it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional if you have any chronic health conditions.

Mango Shake vs. Banana Shake: Which is Better?

When comparing the nutrient content and their contribution to weight loss, the banana shake emerges as the winner. Even in terms of calorie content, the banana shake is a preferred option for those watching their weight. A regular glass of unsweetened mango shake contains around 170 calories, whereas a regular glass of unsweetened banana shake contains only about 150 calories. If you are conscious of your calorie intake, the banana shake is the better choice. Consuming it post-workout can aid in speedy recovery. However, it’s important to note that mango shakes also offer health benefits, and you can incorporate them into your diet occasionally.

In conclusion, when it comes to choosing between mango shake and banana shake from an Ayurvedic perspective, mango shake aligns better with the principles of Ayurveda. However, considering individual health conditions and goals, the banana shake can be a suitable option as well. As with any dietary choice, moderation is key. Consulting a healthcare professional or Ayurvedic expert can provide personalized guidance based on your specific needs and health conditions. So, enjoy your fruit shakes mindfully, stay hydrated, and savor the flavors of summer while maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
