SRA Delays Notices to 20 Errant Developers in Pune Slum Rehabilitation Projects

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in Pune has yet to send notices to 20 developers who have failed to initiate slum development projects despite receiving official sanctions from the SRA five years ago. With 46 pending projects under its jurisdiction, the SRA plans to highlight the inconvenience caused to slum inhabitants in the notices, emphasizing the need for prompt action.

Despite announcing its intention to send notices to negligent developers for their lack of progress in starting slum development projects, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in Pune has yet to take action against the 20 errant developers. These developers were granted official sanctions by the SRA five years ago but have failed to make any substantial progress since then.

Currently, the SRA has 46 pending projects within its administrative jurisdiction, and it is imperative to address the delays and ensure the timely completion of these projects. SRA Chief Executive Officer, Nilesh Gatane, had previously stated that notices would be issued once a preliminary survey was conducted. It is worth noting that the survey has revealed several anomalies on the part of the developers.

Nagesh Gaikawad, the in-charge administrator of the SRA, explained that the ongoing survey is a crucial part of the process, and once it is complete, the SRA will proceed with issuing notices to the 20 developers who have failed to take appropriate action on their allocated projects.

According to the SRA, approximately 61 projects have been successfully completed in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. However, the delay in the remaining projects has caused significant inconvenience to slum dwellers who are eagerly awaiting rehabilitation. In light of this, the SRA intends to highlight the plight of these residents in the notices, emphasizing the urgency of completing the projects.

To address the issue of delays, the SRA recently issued new rules that extend the deadline for project completion. These guidelines grant the SRA the authority to impose penalties or withdraw projects from developers who fail to meet the specified timeframe. By implementing stricter regulations, the SRA aims to expedite the slum rehabilitation process and reduce the number of slums in the city.

The SRA scheme was initiated in Pune in 2005 with the aim of accelerating slum rehabilitation efforts and reducing the prevalence of slums in urban areas. Since its inception, nearly 11,000 slum dwellers have been successfully rehabilitated through SRA projects in Pune City. However, the delays caused by negligent developers hinder the progress of this vital initiative.

It is essential for the SRA to promptly address the issues with these errant developers and ensure that the slum rehabilitation projects move forward without further delays. By holding developers accountable and emphasizing the urgency of completing the projects, the SRA can fulfill its mission of providing improved living conditions for slum dwellers and creating a more inclusive and sustainable urban environment in Pune.
