Pune, June 15, 2023 – In a remarkable move towards sustainability, Central Railway has implemented cost-effective and eco-friendly train operations, signaling a significant stride towards a greener future.
Central Railway has introduced the latest locomotives equipped with Head on Generation (HOG) technology, revolutionizing the way energy is utilized and reducing the environmental impact. This pioneering technology is being employed in the operation of 57 prestigious mail and express trains, setting new standards in energy efficiency.
The HOG technology, also known as a locomotive fitted with a hotel load converter, allows the trains to draw energy directly from the overhead electric supply. This approach proves to be more economical, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly compared to the previous system of using diesel generators to power the coaches for lighting, fans, air conditioning, and pantry car equipment.
Not only does the adoption of HOG technology save costs, but it also contributes to a cleaner and greener future. By utilizing this technology, Central Railway reduces pollution as the operation becomes silent and free from smoke, providing passengers with a better travel experience. Furthermore, the passenger capacity of the trains increases by one coach, accommodating more travelers.
Central Railway currently operates 143 state-of-the-art WAP7 locomotives equipped with hotel load converters, with an average of 57 trains utilizing the head-on-generation technology. This results in substantial benefits for the railway and the environment. Additionally, a standby silent generator car is available for emergency situations.
The implementation of HOG technology has yielded significant savings for Central Railway. On average, the railway saves approximately Rs 15 crore per month through reduced energy costs, while simultaneously curbing carbon emissions by approximately 5,500 metric tons.
With 95 out of 170 rakes already HOG-compliant, Central Railway is committed to gradually transitioning the entire fleet to HOG compliance. This ongoing effort further enhances cost savings and environmental conservation.
