Pune’s Yerwada Jail Incident: Inmate’s Suicidal Act Brings Attention to Prisoner Welfare

Yerwada Jail

PUNE: An undertrial prisoner who is serving a life term for killing a woman, tried to kill himself by slashing his hand with a blade. The prisoner has been identified as Dhananjay Rajaram Dighe, a resident of Guruwar Peth, Pune.

The incident took place near the water tank near the printing press at the open jail of Yerwada Prison on Tuesday at 8.30 am. Dighe had killed Rekha Jitendra Bhandari on April 5, 2014. Both owned xerox shops on the opposite side of the road. Dighe had killed Rekha over a dispute about business rivalry. He was sentenced to a life term in 2019 and he has been serving the punishment since then.

Since his behaviour was good, he had been transferred to the open jail. Since the last few days, his mental health had been affected. On Tuesday morning, he used a blade lying on the ground and slashed himself on his left hand. The police have registered an FIR of attempt to commit suicide against him and PSI Linge is probing the case.
