Cyber crimes new modus operandi of looting in the name of parcel on the pretext of drugs is new in Pune

Pune: The cyber thugs extorted money from a young woman of Rs 3.80 lakhs by claiming that the parcel sent by her through courier contained drugs. The incident took place on July 12 around 3 pm. A 28-year-old woman from Patilnagar, Balewadi has lodged a complaint at Chatushrungi police station. Accordingly, the police have registered a case of fraud against the accused under the Information Technology (IT) Act.

According to the police officer from Chatushrungi police station, ” A complainant works in a private company in the city. The cyber thugs contacted her through mobile and said that the parcel she sent to Taiwan through a courier company contained drugs. They forced her to pay the amount or she will be arrested. Fearing arrest the complainant transferred Rs 3.80 lakhs to the cyber thugs.”

The Pune police informed the citizens that a new modus operandi initiated by cyber thugs to cheat is that they contact you and they will tell you either a parcel has arrived in your name from abroad or the one you have sent it contains drugs. The police may arrest you and they themselves pretend to be the police officer. The police appealed to the Punekars to stay away from such cyber thugs.
