Pune: In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old Army Jawan has been arrested by the Pune City Police for assaulting a traffic policeman, reportedly as an act of revenge for being fined earlier for triple seat driving. The accused Jawan allegedly used a cement block to strike the traffic cop, leaving him injured.
The victim of this brutal attack, identified as Romesh Dhawre, decided to take legal action, resulting in an FIR being registered against Sepoy Vaibhav Sambhaji Mangate, who hails from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Traffic police officer Pankaj Bhopale filed the complaint at the Faraskhana police station, leading to the Jawan’s arrest.
The incident unfolded around 7 pm at Budhwar Chowk near the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple, where Mangate sought out Dhawre, apparently driven by anger from a previous altercation. The FIR provides details of a prior encounter between Dhawre and Mangate, where Dhawre had taken action against the Jawan for triple seat driving, leading to heated arguments and a physical altercation. This deep-seated anger apparently led to the violent attack, with Mangate using a cement block to strike Dhawre on the head. Dhawre was accompanied by Bhopale at the time of the assault and had to be rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, the police acted swiftly and apprehended Mangate, who now faces a slew of serious charges. He has been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), and 353 (obstructing a public servant from discharging official duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
