Unveiling Insights: SNDT College’s Study Reveals Geriatric Women’s Health in Rural Maharashtra

Comprehensive Examination Provides Key Findings on Post-COVID Challenges and Socioeconomic Status

SNDT College of Home Science, Pune, has announced the results of its comprehensive study on the physical and mental health status of geriatric women in rural Maharashtra. Titled “Assessment of physical and mental health status of geriatric women in rural Maharashtra: A post Covid-19 pandemic analysis,” the study sheds light on critical insights gleaned from extensive research.

The study, led by Vinod Shah, co-principal investigator, and Muktaja Mathakari, principal investigator, delved into the post-pandemic health status of elderly women aged 60 years and above in rural Maharashtra, India. With over 9,000 completed interviews, the study offers valuable insights into various dimensions of the geriatric population’s well-being.

According to Shah, the findings underscore significant challenges faced by elderly women, including economic vulnerabilities, limited access to healthcare services, and heightened psychological distress. With a majority of respondents falling within the 60 to 70 years age bracket and facing financial instability, the study highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to address these multifaceted issues.

Mathakari emphasized the importance of bolstering mental well-being support for elderly women, particularly in low-and middle-income countries like India. The study reflects on the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions to address psychological distress and social isolation.

The study, conducted across 34 districts of rural Maharashtra, employed a structured, close-ended schedule to gather data from over 9,000 elderly women. The questionnaire covered various aspects, including socio-demographic information, socioeconomic factors, substance use, physical and nutritional health, psychological impact of the pandemic, and knowledge regarding COVID-19.

Salunke, providing insights into the study’s results, highlighted key demographic trends and socioeconomic indicators among the participants. The findings underscored prevalent issues such as illiteracy, financial instability, and dependency among the elderly population, necessitating comprehensive support services and interventions.

As the findings of SNDT College’s study are unveiled, they provide policymakers, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders with invaluable insights into the health and well-being of geriatric women in rural Maharashtra. Addressing the challenges identified in the study will be crucial in ensuring a holistic approach to elderly care and improving overall quality of life in rural communities.
