Sleepless in Undri: Residents Protest Against Nocturnal Construction Noise

Undri, a peaceful residential area in Pune, is currently facing unrest as residents voice their discontent against disruptive nighttime construction activities. The persistent disturbances, marked by loud noises and the constant movement of heavy construction vehicles, have prompted residents to protest, citing concerns about compromised sleep quality and potential health risks.

According to reports, 2 to 3 construction sites in the vicinity are actively engaged in nighttime construction work, involving activities like drilling, cutting, borewell operations, and the late-night transportation of construction materials. The impact of these disturbances extends beyond individual households, affecting nearby societies as well.

Rohan Survase Patil, the state general secretary of Youth Congress, has taken the collective concerns of affected residents to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner. Patil urges immediate action against those responsible for the disruptive nighttime construction, emphasizing the adverse effects on citizens’ health and the urgent need to halt such activities.

The concerns raised go beyond the disturbance caused by noise; the potential risk of accidents leading to loss of life has also been highlighted.

PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar had previously issued a warning, stating that fines would be imposed on builders conducting nighttime construction work in Pune and its surrounding areas. Kumar emphasized the strict prohibition of construction activity during nighttime hours and warned that violators, including builders and individuals, would face penalties.
