Residents Call for Transparency in Allocation of ₹50 Crore for Road Development

Pune Municipal Corporation

Concerns have arisen among citizens regarding the allocation and utilization of ₹50 crore designated for road development in Pune. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had initially earmarked this fund for the ambitious ideal road scheme aimed at enhancing the infrastructure of 15 roads ahead of the G-20 summit.

Key Points:

  • Rollback of Ideal Road Scheme: The PMC has recently rolled back its ideal road scheme, which was intended for the development of 15 roads in Pune in preparation for the G-20 summit. This scheme encompassed various aspects such as road infrastructure enhancement, encroachment removal, pavement cleaning, decongestion measures, and pothole filling.
  • G-20 Summit Context: The G-20 summit, held from June 12 to 29 in Pune, served as a platform for global leaders to deliberate and formulate strategies to address pressing economic and financial challenges.

  • Allocation of Funds: Nearly ₹150 crore was allocated by the PMC for the beautification and repair of the selected roads that delegates traversed during the summit. The chosen roads included prominent thoroughfares such as Pune – Ahmednagar Road, Solapur Road, Satara Road, Ganeshkhind Road, and others.
  • Scope of Work: The beautification efforts encompassed road repairs, asphalt laying, pavement restoration, and overall enhancement of public spaces. Additionally, a commitment was made to refrain from any excavation work on these roads for a period ranging from three to five years.
  • Citizen Concerns: Civic activist Daljeet Goraya highlighted citizen dissatisfaction with the neglect of other roads in the designated areas that are in poor condition. These neglected roads, heavily used by commuters, have raised concerns about equitable distribution of resources and infrastructure development.
  • PMC Response: Sahebrao Dandge, Superintendent of the PMC road department, assured that steps are being taken to ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the upgraded road infrastructure on the selected 15 roads. Furthermore, plans are in place to enhance the overall road network in Pune to facilitate smooth movement for commuters.

As citizens demand transparency and accountability in the allocation and execution of funds earmarked for road development, the PMC faces mounting pressure to address concerns and prioritize infrastructure projects effectively. The efficient utilization of resources remains paramount in ensuring the seamless mobility and safety of Pune’s residents.
