Rapid Increase in Dengue Cases Raises Concerns in Pune

Pune, 15th July 2023: The city of Pune has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of dengue cases, with 92 suspected cases reported in the month of July alone. Out of these, 12 cases have been confirmed as dengue-positive. This alarming increase in cases has raised concerns among health experts, who are urging citizens to take preventive measures and be aware of the necessary precautions in the event of a dengue infection.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area has experienced a steady rise in the number of dengue patients since the beginning of this month. Health experts are emphasizing the importance of caution and vigilance to prevent the further spread of the disease. According to the World Health Organization, dengue infects an estimated 10 to 40 million people worldwide each year, mainly in warm and temperate regions.

Recognizing the symptoms of dengue is crucial for early detection and prompt medical intervention. Most dengue infections present mild symptoms or may even be asymptomatic. Common symptoms include high fever (104°F), severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, dizziness, nausea, swollen glands, and skin rashes. These symptoms typically appear between 4 to 10 days after infection and last for about 2 to 7 days.

Preventive measures play a crucial role in reducing the risk of dengue transmission. Since the dengue mosquito is active during the day, it is important to take precautionary measures throughout the day. Wearing clothing that covers the body completely, using mosquito repellents in the surroundings, and installing nets on windows can help prevent mosquito bites and reduce the chances of infection.

In case of dengue infection, it is essential to prioritize rest and maintain proper hydration by consuming plenty of fluids. Paracetamol tablets can be taken to alleviate body pain, but it is important to avoid the use of painkillers. Severe symptoms should be immediately addressed by seeking medical attention.

Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, PMC’s Health Officer, has reassured the public that dengue prevention measures are being implemented in Pune city. Spraying efforts are being carried out in areas prone to dengue infestation, and ward offices are actively identifying and eliminating potential breeding sites. Naidu Hospital and Kamala Nehru Hospital are well-prepared to provide necessary treatment for dengue patients.

In light of the rising dengue cases, it is crucial for the residents of Pune to stay vigilant, follow preventive measures, and seek medical attention if any symptoms of dengue are experienced. By working together and taking necessary precautions, the community can effectively combat the spread of dengue and ensure the well-being of its residents.
