Corps of Army Air Defence Marks 31st Raising Day with Pomp and Pride

The Corps of Army Air Defence (AAD) celebrated its 31st Raising Day at Headquarters Southern Command, commemorating a rich legacy of resilience and commitment. The event paid homage to the force’s illustrious history while projecting a determined vision for a more advanced and formidable future under the war cry ‘Akashe Shatrun Jahi,’ translating to ‘Shoot the Enemy in Air.’

With roots tracing back to 1939, when Anti-aircraft units were established to counter Japanese air threats during World War-II, the Corps of Army Air Defence officially began its journey on September 15, 1940. Initially formed as the Number 1 Anti-Aircraft Training Centre in Colaba (Mumbai), the establishment was completed in Karachi by January 1941. Following India’s independence, the Corps became a part of the Regiment of Artillery and eventually emerged as a distinct arm on January 10, 1994, solidifying its position as a critical combat support arm of the Indian Army.

The ongoing transformation of the Corps unfolds on a dual track of modernization and upgrade. This includes the introduction of cutting-edge weapon systems and the qualitative enhancement of existing ones. At present, the Corps stands at a pivotal juncture, poised to evolve into a modern and technologically advanced force.

Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen AK Singh, GOC-in-C, Southern Command, applauded the unwavering commitment and dedication of the Air Defence warriors. He urged them to continue pursuing excellence in all aspects, emphasizing that the ongoing modernization program would significantly augment the overall operational capabilities of the Indian Army.

The Corps of Army Air Defence boasts a glorious history adorned with numerous honors and awards. Notable mentions include four Battle Honors, four Military Crosses, two Orders of the British Empire, one Medal of the British Empire, seven Indian Distinguished Service Medals, and two Ashok Chakras.
