Pune: PCMC Transfers Water Dues Collection to Tax Collection Department

Pimpri, 15th July 2023: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken the decision to transfer the responsibility of water dues collection from the Water Supply Department to the Tax Collection Department. The move comes as a response to the Water Supply Department’s inability to effectively collect water dues. Under this transition, 28-meter inspectors have been appointed under the tax collection department to streamline the process.

Pimpri-Chinchwad boasts a significant number of properties, totaling 602,000, which include both domestic and commercial premises. With 175,000 official taps, the city relies on a robust system for water supply. However, the water supply department has been struggling to collect the expected water tax, resulting in outstanding amounts owed by the department to tap holders exceeding Rs 60 crore.

To address this issue, PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh has entrusted the responsibility of water dues collection to the Tax Collection Department. This decision is based on the understanding that the effective recovery of water dues requires specialized expertise and the ability to handle technical tasks such as maintenance repairs and addressing grievances. By transferring the responsibility to the Tax Collection Department, the aim is to enhance the recovery of past dues, streamline follow-ups, address bill correction cases, and conduct awareness campaigns.

Nilesh Deshmukh, Assistant Commissioner of the Taxation and Tax Collection Department, PCMC, expressed the department’s commitment to maximizing revenue from water dues. The Tax Collection Department has successfully employed modern technology and measures, such as seizure campaigns, to enhance tax collection. Similar strategies will be adopted to ensure the efficient and timely collection of water dues. With immediate effect, the Tax Collection Department has taken charge of water dues collection.

This decision by the PCMC aims to address the challenges faced by the Water Supply Department in collecting water dues. By leveraging the expertise and resources of the Tax Collection Department, the municipality hopes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of water dues collection. The timely collection of water dues is crucial for the proper functioning and maintenance of the water supply system in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Ultimately, this transfer of responsibility is expected to benefit the residents and ensure the sustainable provision of water services in the region.
