Pune’s Zoo Prepares to Welcome Two Pairs of Zebras in Biodiversity Boost

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune is set to undergo a remarkable transformation with the imminent arrival of two pairs of zebras. This exciting development is part of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) efforts to enrich biodiversity at the zoo. The initiative, which received approval from the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZAI) in 2022, marks a significant step toward enhancing the wildlife offerings at the park.

The tendering process for the acquisition of these zebras has been initiated by the PMC, signaling the beginning of an approximately 7-8 month-long endeavor. PMC’s Garden Department has meticulously planned and prepared for this initiative, aiming to create a welcoming environment for the zebras within the zoo’s confines. It’s worth noting that a previous attempt to procure zebras was hindered by incomplete documentation from involved agencies, ultimately leading to its cancellation.

Ashok Ghorpade, Chief Garden Superintendent of PMC, shared insights into the ongoing process, stating, “This process will take around 7-8 months. Currently, a tender has been invited for the zebras. A year ago, we had attempted this, but the agency had incomplete documents, causing a delay in the process. Preparations have been made in the zoo to accommodate the zebras.”

Dr. Rajkumar Jadhav, Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, shed light on the intricacies of the tendering process, explaining, “The tender bids have been invited from animal dealers, with an estimated cost of around ₹25 lakh for one zebra. Importation could potentially involve sourcing from America or Europe, as it is currently banned in Africa, adding a layer of complexity to the acquisition. Time will be a crucial factor in this venture.”

The introduction of zebras to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park promises to be a unique spectacle for visitors and an essential step in enhancing wildlife offerings within the region. Moreover, this endeavor underscores the commitment of the PMC and zoo authorities to wildlife conservation.

As the PMC diligently progresses through the tender process, they are working closely with zoo authorities to ensure the seamless integration of these magnificent creatures into their new habitat. The arrival of zebras at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is poised to be a remarkable milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote biodiversity and conservation in the region. Visitors and wildlife enthusiasts can eagerly anticipate witnessing these elegant and striking animals in the heart of Pune.
