Pune’s PMPML Implements Strict Measures: Bus Drivers Who Disregard Traffic Signals Face Termination

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has taken a resolute step to curb accidents involving its buses by introducing a stringent “carrot and stick” policy. Under this policy, drivers found guilty of flouting traffic signal rules and driving recklessly will face severe consequences, including the possibility of being dismissed from their positions.

Striking a Balance:

Sachindra Pratap Singh, the CMD of PMPML, emphasized that the implementation of this policy is aimed at maintaining road safety and preventing accidents caused by rash driving or violations of traffic regulations. Drivers who demonstrate a commitment to adhering to traffic norms and ensuring passenger safety will be duly recognized and rewarded for their responsible conduct.

Recent Incidents Trigger Response:

The urgency of this policy was underscored by recent accidents involving PMPML buses. In one tragic incident, a woman lost her life after being hit by a PMPML-owned bus alleged to have jumped a signal. Such occurrences have prompted PMPML to adopt a proactive approach in addressing the concerns of both road safety and passenger protection.

Private Contractor Involvement:

Sachindra Pratap Singh acknowledged that a significant number of accidents involve buses operated by private contractors. In response, PMPML is collaborating with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) to provide comprehensive training to drivers associated with private contractors. This initiative aims to enhance the skills of these drivers and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

Identification of Accident-Prone Areas:

PMPML is also taking steps to identify accident-prone areas within the city. Once these areas are identified, collaborative efforts with relevant authorities will be undertaken to enhance safety measures, thus minimizing the occurrence of accidents.

Mitigating Driver Fatigue and Double Duty:

Sachindra Pratap Singh highlighted another crucial aspect contributing to accidents: driver fatigue. Some private contractors reportedly assign double duty to drivers, which compromises their rest periods and, consequently, their attentiveness on the road. PMPML has issued strict instructions to contractors to eliminate this practice and prioritize driver well-being to mitigate potential accidents.

Community Engagement and Safety Advocacy:

Activists and commuters have also voiced their concerns. PMP Pravasi Manch activist Sanjay Shitole emphasized the importance of collaboration between PMPML, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), and the police to address the issue more comprehensively. Commuters like Chentil Iyer and Priyesh Kumar urged fellow passengers to report incidents and hold PMPML accountable for road safety measures.

As PMPML embarks on this journey to ensure safer roads and responsible driving behavior, the introduction of this “carrot and stick” approach is poised to be a critical step forward in safeguarding both passengers and pedestrians alike.
