Pune School Students Lead Plastic Recycling Initiative, Repair Road with Innovative Material

Collaborative Efforts of Indus School and Keshav Sita Foundation Pave the Way for Sustainable Road Maintenance

Pune News : A remarkable initiative spearheaded by students from various schools in Pune is revolutionizing plastic waste management while simultaneously addressing road maintenance challenges. Led by Indus School in Bhugaon and facilitated by the Keshav Sita Foundation, this innovative project highlights the potential of youth-led efforts in environmental conservation and community development.

Over the past year and a half, students from more than 25 affiliated schools, including Abhinav School, Cummins School, and Vibgyor School, have actively participated in collecting plastic waste. The collected plastic, amounting to approximately 1 tonne, is then recycled by the Keshav Sita Foundation, underscoring the importance of plastic awareness and responsible waste management.

Mayur Hadgal, collection manager at the Keshav Sita Foundation, emphasized the significance of spreading awareness about plastic’s detrimental effects on the environment. Through monthly collection drives at schools, students are educated about the impact of plastic pollution and motivated to take tangible steps towards mitigating it.

Taking their commitment a step further, the students initiated a groundbreaking project utilizing plastic waste tar for road maintenance. Selecting a road near Indus School in Bhugaon, the students embarked on repairing it with this innovative material. Not only does this initiative promote sustainability by repurposing plastic waste, but it also fosters community development by addressing infrastructure needs.

To support this endeavor, the student-led team reached out to various businesses and prominent groups for funding. The collaborative efforts of these young changemakers underscore their profound understanding of environmental conservation and their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the planet for future generations.
