Pune Residents Unite Against Tree Felling in Baner: Demand Clarity and Green Alternatives from PMC

On the 20th of February, concerned citizens of Pune gathered for a site visit with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address the imminent felling of 81 trees on Baner Road. The trees, originally planted by the PMC Road Department in 2017, are slated for removal to accommodate changes in road design, particularly the relocation of the existing cycle track.

Chaitanya Ket, an active Pune resident, criticized the decision, stating, “It’s illogical that trees planted in 2017 need to be felled/re-planted due to road design alterations. The proposed changes are set to increase road width for parking, leading to the removal of a total of 181 trees.”

Citizens’ observations and concerns include the lack of consideration for alternative plans that could save the trees, insufficient provision for new tree plantation, and the absence of planning for pedestrian safety with upcoming metro stations.

Meghna Bhandari questioned the justification for cutting trees for parking, highlighting that it violates the Tree Act. She raised concerns about the lack of long-term planning and the inadequacy of a 2-meter footpath for a road with planned metro stations. Bhandari criticized the lack of space for replanting and the PMC’s failure to adhere to the Tree Act guidelines.

Anil Sabale, Tree Officer at PMC Aundh-Baner Ward Office, acknowledged citizens’ concerns and stated, “Some trees could be saved, and a meeting with the Chief Engineer of the PMC Road Department will be arranged to discuss possible solutions and outcomes.”

Citizens’ Demands for Transparency:

  1. Both-side plans from University Chowk to Sadanand hotel.
  2. Urgent meeting with the road department.
  3. Detailed planning of footpath, road length, and the number of trees that could be saved.
  4. Clarity on the replanting of trees as per Tree Act guidelines.
  5. Inclusion of citizens in decision-making processes for sustainable development.

Conclusion: Pune residents are rallying against the proposed tree felling in Baner, emphasizing the need for transparent planning and sustainable alternatives. The PMC is urged to reconsider its decision and engage citizens in meaningful discussions to ensure the preservation of green spaces amid urban development.
